Week 9: Homegrown Tomatoes

The moment you’ve all been waiting for… tomato season!

(Okay, okay, if we’re being honest, we know the real moment you’re waiting for is when lettuce makes its return. We’re still about one to two weeks out on that.)

Back to the tomatoes, we’ve had our first harvest! You may have spotted them at market already, but now we’re ready to share them with all of you. This season, we’ll have three varieties: an orange saladette, a roma, and the Black Prince heirloom.

Our sweet pepper patch is just starting to blush with color. This year we’re growing Cornito peppers, known for their tapered shape and sweet flavor. They’re excellent grilled, roasted, or eaten fresh.

Same as last week, if you’re not feeling excited about the greens in your share, just let us know. We can make you a discount code so you can pick something else from the online store. If you already have a code, it’s still valid for free choice shopping.

The online store is open now and will stay open through Tuesday at midnight. Unless you’ve requested otherwise, deliveries will go out on their normal day.

This week’s share will likely include:

  • Collard greens

  • Clementine tomatoes (most likely)

  • Poblanos

We were thinking this week’s veggies would be perfect for enchiladas! If you still have any cabbage left, you could whip up a slaw for a fresh side dish.

A little more on collards: these sturdy workhorses of the leafy greens world can handle heat, long cooking times, and big flavors. Here are a few easy ways to use them:

  • Slice into ribbons and simmer low and slow with garlic, onion, a little broth, and a splash of vinegar until tender.

  • Chop and sauté with olive oil and garlic for 5–10 minutes, finishing with lemon juice or hot sauce.

  • Blanch large leaves for a few seconds and use them as wraps for grains, beans, or meat (swapping tortillas for collard leaves).

  • Add to soups or stews during the last 15–20 minutes of cooking. They hold their shape beautifully.

We hope you’re having a great summer, and as always, thank you for trusting us to grow your food. As always, feel free to reach out to us! If you need some inspiration, we love to share our favorite recipes.
